A couple months ago my trucks blower motor stopped working at full speed, but still worked at all the other speeds. OK, I’ll have to change the resister pack one of these days.
Yesterday it flip flopped, all of the sudden it would only work at full speed. I figured I’d better change that resister pack this weekend.
Today it stopped working completely. Then I smelled the unmistakable smell of burning electronics.
The conector into the resister pack is melted. This is officially where I stop messing with it and take it to my favorite indie mechanic.
I can’t get that aweful smell out of my nose either.

I had a wiper switch/stalk fry itself, while driving. Get that smell of burnt electronics, look down to see smoke coming out of the steering column. NOPE.

I know what you’re saying about getting rid of awful smells... ever since this happened I’ve had a burnt trans fluid smell after a good run. It’s the transmission fluid that leaked out. It basically varnished everything down that side. Including the exhaust pipe. So, whenever it gets good and hot I get a reminder.
On the plus side, it rustproofed a good chunk of my frame.

Luckily it didn't start smoking. Although I was smart enough to turn the blower motor off when it happened, so that probably helped.

Tacos like to melt the blower harness too;

Buy a resistor and wiring pigtail. Easy job. First you strip back some of that tape on the wiring harness. You lay the new pigtail on top of your old one in the same configuration and tape the seven wires to each other in the correct order after sliding some shrink tubing on each. You the cut and splice each wire in sequence to ensure its wired correctly. Then shrink the tubing over each splice. Wrap some new tape over the harness to make it look pretty. Swap the resistor out and plug things together. Its maybe an hour to complete if you are slow at soldering. I wouldn’t crimp splice these type of things.
Just to let you know, rewiring cut harnesses on S4 Alcantara seats when you want to install them in an Audi A4 takes 4 hours to do 88 wires , with matching wire gauge/color codes and swapping the complete interior :)

The resistor pack on my Twingo broke about a year ago, my blower would only work at the highest speed. I found out it was a €5 part, though it could only be reached by removing almost the whole dashboard, so I just had a shop deal with it, wasn’t really interested in breaking tons of interior clips myself.

More bang, less fizzle. Smells way more awful too, had a spare airbag we set off once. This was also before all that drama.

Better then blowd up.

Yep! Dropped it off at Patterson’s last night. I hate soldering.
I’m just glad we have a nice day. I’ve got a couple things to do today, and the no AC Buick is a bit of a terrarium with all that glass.

Last time I soldered was in 7th grade - learning how to splice wires was being taught in Industrial Tech, along with setting type.

Every time I solder, I burn the crap out of my fingers.

Burning flesh way more stinky then burning electronics.

And a lot more painful!

Can’t argue with that.
